This ride explores the area around the new Thornton Recreation Center. This
center and Open Space park, centrally located near 112th Ave and Colorado Blvd,
is among the metro area's newest recreation facilities.
Start this loop on the north side of 108th Ave, in the large park that extends in three directions. Follow the trail northwest through the greenbelt until you reach Colorado Blvd. Take the sidewalk north to the light at 110th Pl, and cross into the rec center parking lot (0.4). On the south, there is a demonstration xeriscape garden, showing how nice plants can look without requiring excessive water. In Colorado's dry weather (and with increasing pressure on our water supplies), it may be worth your while to stop here and get a few ideas. Follow the blacktop trail beside the garden into the large park. The grassy expanse is perfect for a frisbee match or soccer game. A trail circles the area, a nice flat path great for coasting on. Loop around, and come back by the garden (1.4). Carefully work your way through the parking lot, turning right (south) out of the far entrance, then left onto Muriel Dr (the first street) at mile 1.8. This quiet street runs through an older neighborhood until ending at 110th Ave (2.1). Turn right here, and follow it until you reach Grange Creek Park (2.3) on your right. This popular park boasts picnic tables and a playground. The trail cuts through the park, running downhill to your starting point (2.7). For a longer ride, you can cross 108th Ave to Riverdale Park (also known as ‘Prairie Dog Paradise'). This ride rolls further downhill through a wild Open Space. Many trees line the creek banks, giving it a more natural feel -- a feel heightened by the numerous prairie dog colonies. The trail works its way southeast through open space, losing a little elevation as it makes its way to the end at Riverdale Rd and 104th Ave (3.5). There are also connections to the neighborhoods to the east and west, if you care to ride back along a residential street. OPTIONS: The main attraction in this western section of Thornton is the Recreation Center. As more and more new centers arise in the Denver suburbs, it seems as if each tries to outdo the others. This particular center, in addition to the weight rooms, racquetball courts, swimming pools, and aerobics classes, adds a wave pool to the mix. This center is very popular, especially on weekend nights. | ![]() |
